The Bearwood Lleyn Flock (Flock 981) was established in 1998 and now totals 400 ewes.
Since the very beginning the Bearwood flock has performance recorded, using Signet Breeding Services’ Best Linear Unbiased Prediction (BLUP) analysis which presents the most important genetic traits in the form of Estimated Breeding Values (EBV’s) to create the Lleyn Maternal Index and the Lleyn Carcase + Index.
Lleyn Maternal Index
The Maternal Index has been designed to enhance the overall productivity of the lowland ewe, taking into account early lamb growth rate and maternal ability.
Lleyn Carcase + Index
The Carcase + Index has been designed to increase the weight of lean tissue in the carcase, whilst minimising any associated rise in carcase fatness and enhance the maternal ability of ewes.
The Bearwood flock uses the above indices in conjunction with an assessment of breed type and conformation to select stock as replacements and for sale.
These breeding indices can assist breeders and ram buyers to identify stock for a specific breeding objective.
We sell males and females through the Lleyn Sheep Society sales at Exeter, Ross-on-Wye, Ruthin and Carmarthen and privately off the farm.
