The Bearwood Lleyn flock of pedigree sheep (Flock 981) was established in 1998 after purchasing aged ewes from Marcus Bullock (Flock 619), yearling ewes from Dai Morris (Flock 873) and ewe lambs from the flocks of John Geldard (Flock 619) and Lionel Organ (Flock 306). The flock now numbers 350 ewes.

Since the very beginning, the Bearwood Lleyn Flock has used performance recording to promote and enhance the maternal characteristics for which the Lleyn breed is renowned. View the Lleyn Sheep Society web page . We use 'Signet Breeding Services’ latest BLUP technology to analyse performance records to create the Lleyn Maternal Index, concentrating particularly on:

  1. Litter Size – which identifies rams that will sire prolific females.
  2. Maternal Ability – which identifies rams whose grand progeny will have superior growth rates due to the maternal characteristics of their mothers (i.e. their milk production and maternal care).
  3. Eight Week Weight – which identifies breeding lines whose progeny will have fast growth rates to 8 weeks of age.

The sheep flock is Maedi Visna accredited, a member of the National Scrapie Plan and a member of FABBL farm assurance.

New for 2008 We now have Carcase Index figures for our rams and breeding females. The Lleyn Carcase Index is based on EBVs for maternal ability, scan weight, muscle depth and fat depth.

Both these breeding indexes can assist breeders and ram buyers to identify stock for a specific breeding objective

The Bearwood Lleyn flock has come 1st in the Best Managed Sheep Flock with the Weobley and District Agricultural Improvement Society three times in the last five years and has come 2nd  the other two. It was the Best New Entrant with the Midlands Lleyn Club in 2006 and 3rd in the Large Flock Category in 2006 and 2008. In 2008 the flock was judged the best in the competition that uses permanent pasture.

We sell males and females through the Lleyn Sheep Society sales at Exeter, Ross-on-Wye and Ruthin and privately off the farm.

Vistors are most welcome to come and view our flock, please phone first.
